Lumens are only the beginning
Lumens describe total light output, not beam distance, shape, color, or sustained brightness. Some lamps step down quickly from a high burst. Read runtime charts and output levels rather than comparing the biggest front-of-box number.
Flood beams suit camp tasks; spot beams help identify a route or distant marker. A combined lamp can do both but may add control complexity.
Low light is a real feature
A very low white mode preserves battery and reduces glare while cooking, reading, or moving around a shared campground. Red modes can reduce disturbance in some situations, but they do not make a user invisible and are not necessary for every person.
Angle adjustment should point at hands and trail without forcing the neck downward. Test whether the lamp remembers the last mode or starts on an unexpectedly bright setting.
Choose a power plan
Replaceable batteries are easy to swap and can be stored separately; rechargeable packs reduce disposables and may offer better cold management when removable. Proprietary packs can be difficult to replace away from home. Some hybrid lamps accept both.
Carry enough verified power for the trip and protect contacts from moisture. Do not count a phone flashlight as both backup illumination and the sole navigation or emergency device.
Controls and weather
Water-resistance codes apply under specific tests; they do not promise indefinite submersion or operation with open charging ports. Follow the current manual.

Use light considerately
Aim beams downward around other camps, avoid shining into tents or faces, and use the lowest useful level. Know the toilet route before dark. Keep the lamp in the same reachable place every night.
Before departure: Charge or install fresh verified batteries, test every mode, engage lockout, and pack independent backup power or a second small light.
Evaluate light through an entire night
Set the lamp to the level you would use for cooking and time how long it remains useful, not merely how long any light is emitted. Runtime standards and manufacturer graphs can show step-down behavior that a single headline omits. A high turbo mode may last briefly, while a moderate regulated mode could be more valuable for walking. Check beam artifacts and peripheral illumination in a safe familiar place.
Controls matter when tired. Practice turning on the lowest mode without cycling through glare, engaging lockout, checking battery status, tilting the housing, and operating buttons with gloves. Make sure the strap remains stable without causing pressure. A separate red mode can be considerate, but dim white light aimed downward often performs camp tasks more accurately.
Choose power around the itinerary. A rechargeable lamp needs verified capacity, a protected cable, and enough stored power; a replaceable-battery lamp needs correct spare cells protected from short circuits. Cold can reduce performance, so follow the manufacturer’s storage and use guidance. Do not mix old and new or different battery types unless explicitly allowed.
Carry an independent backup light where loss of the primary would matter. Store it somewhere reachable rather than at the pack bottom. Around camp, point beams away from faces and tents, learn the toilet route in daylight, and avoid using maximum output as entertainment. Before each departure, inspect the housing and strap, test every intended mode, charge or replace power, and activate lockout.

Keep specifications current
Model names can persist while batteries, charging ports, runtime behavior, or water-resistance details change. Verify the exact current manual before recommending or buying a lamp, and distinguish tested standards from marketing language. Replace damaged cells and swollen rechargeable packs through appropriate disposal channels rather than carrying them outdoors.
